Elecom TK-TCT005BK keypad and trackpad
Elecom's TK-TCT005BK might resemble a notebook trackpad to some at first glance (an external version, of course), but it is interesting to note that the Elecom TK-TCT005BK can also be turned into a touch-based numeric USB pad with a push of a button, letting you "obtain" an almost instantaneous numeric pad to any computer when plugged in. Out in Japan later this month, we wonder whether import shops elsewhere will be willing to bring in the Elecom TK-TCT005BK.

CrunchPad Wins "Breakthrough Award," Fails to Materialize
Between the latest Apple iPad and Microsoft Courier rumors, the race to the perfect tablet has become something of a waiting game. If last night's Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards are any indication, however, Michael Arrington and TechCrunch just might beat all of the major tech players to the punch.
During last night's ceremonies, PM handed out awards to the Nikon Coolpix s1000pj ad the Palm Pre, among others. One product stood out on the list, however: TechCrunch's long rumored CrunchPad tablet, which appeared on the evening's program but was conspicuously absent from the night's festivities.
According to Popular Mechanics, the actual device just didn't make it in time, which seems to suggest that while the CrunchPad does in fact exist, its creators rushed--and failed--to get it in under the wire.
Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but this also seems to imply that we may be seeing an actual product coming to market soon. After all, the Breakthrough Awards are largely giv

Mophie Brings the Power
Those gadgets you carry around can keep you plugged in only if they stay plugged in. Hey, you don't want to risk losing contact for a few hours due to a dead battery. You'd better plan ahead with some extra chargers.Mophie has just released a whole line of charging solutions for USB-compatible devices. There's the hybrid Wall & Car International USB Charger ($24.95) which works at home or in the car, and has a rotating AC adapter arm for making a good connection at any angle. Travelers will also dig the International Adapter Travel Kit ($14.95), a low-priced solution for connecting abroad. The multi-gadgeted should look to the Dual USB Wall Charger ($19.95), which lets you power two devices at once.

Steve Ballmer Not a Fan of E-Book Readers
What do you get the CEO who has everything? If you were thinking of picking up a Kindle for Steve Ballmer for the holidays, you can think again. The Microsoft head is not a fan of e-book readers.
Asked what he thinks about such devices during the recording of a Netherlands TV show, Ballmer answered, "We have a device for reading. It's the most popular device in the world. It's the PC." Oh, snap.
Ballmer added, "I would love to see companies like Amazon and others bring their books to the PC. Hopefully we can get that to happen with Barnes & Noble or Amazon or somebody. But no, we are not interested in e-readers ourselves."
All of this ultimately brings into question the Courier prototype we saw, a couple of weeks back. The device is ostensibly a tablet, sure, but judging from the design, the ability to display e-books sure seems to be at the top of its to-do list.

Rumor: Barnes & Noble Running Android on forthcoming E-Book Reader
There's not really a heck of a lot to back this one up--Gizmodo got a tip from "someone who (quite convincingly!) claims to work for B&N developing mobile apps." According to the source, the forthcoming Barns and Noble-branded e-book reader will be running Google's Android OS.
Real or not, it definitely seems like a sound idea--and a step in the right direction given the sub-par operating systems employed by readers like the Amazon Kindle. Of course, even with Android employed, the manufacturer could ultimately strip some features from the device. Still, even with some features crippled, this could be a step in the right direction toward next generation devices.

CEATEC: Sharp intros NetWalker, the touchscreen mini-netbook
If you're one of the many iPhone fans who have longed for a full-fledged tactile keyboard to go along with your touchscreen device, the new NetWalker PC-Z1 from Sharp, displayed at this week's CEATEC in Japan, may be the powerful compromise solution you've been looking for. The tiny unit is meant to occupy the space somewhere between a smartphone and a netbook with a quick launch function (three seconds) and an easy to navigate 5-inch touchscreen interface.
In addition to allowing you to surf the Internet, send email, and create documents, the NetWalker is also designed to work as an electronic dictionary and e-book reader. Running on the Ubuntu OS, the device also features an optical pointer, a USB port, WiFi, 4 gigabytes of memory, a microSD memory card slot, and has a battery life of 10 hours. Priced at 44,800 yen ($500), the unit is scheduled for Japan release in late October.

Keeping the water fresh
My teenagers are so amazing to watch. I often wonder if my parents took the time to watch my brothers and sisters as I do my own children. It is something to see as they figure their way in the world. Even though everything that has happened to them has happened to everyone else it is as though it is happening for the first time on earth. I feel very fortunate that I have the opportunity to watch these creatures in action! They have little texting messages going back and forth with each other constantly. They use initials to stand for words and sometimes entire statements. I saw the letters gswf on my computer in an email. i asked my son had he ever heard of these letters together and what they stood for. He said that it was a GE refrigerator water filter! I was so amazed at how he knew that. I had told everyone how smart he was to have known that. That night at dinner I brought it up again how amazing that was he knew that. He said that he had to tell me something. He had seen it earl
