Report: Barnes & Noble Nook E-Reader Out Today
The New York Times let slip some more details about the much anticipated Barnes & Noble e-reader. The new device, set to be announced today at an event in Manhattan, thas been christened the Nook. The device will feature dual screens--one a grayscale reading display and the other with color touchscreen controls. The reader will be priced at $259--the same as the Kindle.
The Times also amusingly quoted an ad from its own "Book Review," stating that the device will "permit readers to lend their digital books to friends and download books wirelessly." Barnes & Noble, interestingly, refused to comment to The Times about the ad it ran in the paper.

Hands-On: Sonos Shows Off the New ZonePlayer S5
Sonos reps stopped by the PCMag office today to demo the brand new Sonos ZonePlayer S5. In case you missed our post last week, the ZP S5 will be available in early November for $400, easily making it the most affordable way to entire the Sonos wireless home audio world. A Sonos starter bundle, which features two "zones" that stream music from your PC and Internet-based services, will cost you $1,000, and that doesn't even factor in the extra cost of speakers. The ZP S5, on the other hand, is basically nothing but a speaker unit, and it is controlled by either the Sonos remote, which costs $350, or an iPhone or iPod touch running the free Sonos app.So now, any iPhone or iPod touch owner can now enter the world
of Sonos wireless audio streaming for $400. Sure, that's not cheap, but
compared to all sorts of iPod docks out there, it's only a bit more
expensive and can do a lot more.More info and pics after the jump.

ViconRevue chronicles your life
Vicon's latest product, the ViconRevue, now comes with 1GB of internal memory that ought to be sufficient to store a whole lot of photographic stills thanks to its VGA camera sensor that shoots an image every half a minute. It won't come cheap though since they retail for £500 each, and was developed for those studying Alzheimers and dementia, although there is word of a consumer model coming out sometime next year. Guys, you had better make sure you are careful with this when peeing!

Alex reader's two screens integrate the web and e-ink
Here's a fresh take on the e-reader: Alex, a dual-screen e-book reader by Spring Design. It's a hybrid book reader and tablet, with what its designers call a Duet Navigator — a 3.5"color LCD display on the bottom and a 6-inch monochrome electronic paper display on top. Running Google Android, it lets you interact with the web via Wi-Fi or 3G.
The idea here is to use the electronic paper display for extended reading sessions, without sacrificing the immediacy of navigating the Web with that LCD display. You can save content you find on the web for later reading on the e-ink screen, or use the web as a vast reference source, looking up details, or viewing pics and video about what you're reading on the e-ink screen.
This looks like a great idea, but Spring Design is not talking price yet, a crucial part of this innovative design. If it's about the price of a Kindle 2 (now $259, originally $359), count us in. Spring Design says it's still negotiating with content partners, and th

Mmmmm, gadgetry
English inventor-genius James Dyson is coming out with a bladeless fan! Look at that! With my twin loves of gadgets and moving air, will I be able to hold out until the price drops from the absurd $300? Probably. But I'll regret the wait!
Mr Dyson and his team of fluid dynamics engineers developed the technology behind the bladeless fan after studying the performance of an earlier Dyson invention, the Dyson Airblade commercial hand dryer that uses sheets of clean air travelling at 400mph to dry hands far more quickly and efficiently than rivals.
A team of fluid dynamics engineers spent four years running hundreds of simulations to precisely measure and optimise the machine's circular aperture and airfoil-shaped ramp before perfecting Dyson's Air Multiplier technology.
"We realised that this inducement, or amplification, effect could be further enhanced by passing airflow over a ramp," says Mr Dyson. "And of course this was the point where the idea of a bladeless fan became a r

Another Wanat Takeaway -- Purify NOW
I've energized the grid, so to speak, on this small arms at Wanat issue, but another interesting finding in the draft report is this forceful demand for water purification solutions for troops from the individual to the small unit:
The absence of effective crew (squad or platoon) water purification and individual soldier water purification equipment adversely constrained operations at COP Kahler. After 235 years of U.S. Army combat and field operations, it is inexcusable that the U.S. Army still lacks the ability for deployed soldiers to sterilize their own drinking water in sufficient quantities in hot weather climates utilizing a man-portable, hand-carried, lightweight, reliable and effective water purification system.
The author suggested the individual SteriPen system, which purifies water using UV light, and other easily portable solutions that can purify water in high volumes that are readily available on the commercial market. Never once in the field have I seen a camping t
