Brainwave toys are back
Weird headsets that read people's minds? It sounds like dystopian science fiction, but these gadgets (helped by a little old-fashioned muscle measurement) are set to be the holiday season's hot toys. The promised future, of mind games that lapse into punishing tension headaches, is finally upon us.
If you're old enough to remember the early 1980s, you'd be forgiven a degree of skepticism. Atari's Mindlink introduced the headband form factor and some of the tech seen in its modern counterparts, but didn't even get the chance to be a pioneering flop.
Atari Museum describes it so:
The headband would read resistance from muscles in the users forehead and interpret them into commands on the screen. ... Atari was ahead of its time with innovations such as these and given time for refinement and newer design technologies the idea of the Mindlink system would've grown into a successful peripheral.
A version of Breakout was developed, but the gaming biz hit hard times and Mindlink w

JVC DR-BH250 does VHS as well
VHS doesn't want to die nicely it seems, as the format is still hanging around the likes of DVD and Blu-ray as evident by the JVC DR-BH250 which is full well capable of recording in VHS and Blu-ray physical formats apart from copying over other digital content onto its 250GB hard drive. Expect the JVC DR-BH250 to arrive in Japan for $1,400 from the beginning of November onwards.

D&D on multi-touch table
Students at Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) developed a Dungeons & Dragons experience for the Microsoft Surface multi-touch table. From ETC:
The objective of the SurfaceScapes project is to create a proof-of-concept for playing tabletop role-playing games on the Microsoft Surface Table. We will be using Dungeons and Dragons as a basis for our prototype, with the option for future expansion to other role-playing games. SurfaceScapes will provide Game Masters and players with a set of features to enhance the combat and role-playing aspects of tabletop games. This will include the ability to interact with the digital environment using real objects such as miniatures and provide automated calculations and visual and audio feedback for actions performed by the player and non-player characters. We are taking traditional tabletop role-playing games to the next level, adding a new layer of immersive and intuitive gaming to the Microsoft Surface Table and assisting both

Netflix on the Wii? Not Just Yet.
Netflix on the Wii? Netflix and Nintendo are staying mum.
Rumors surfaced on Wednesday that the DVD rental service is preparing to offer its streaming movie service via Nintendo's Wii. It makes sense--Netflix already has streaming deals with the Microsoft Xbox and, more recently, the Sony PlayStation--but at this point, there is no official news to report.
"Certainly the Wii represents a great opportunity given the size of its installed base, but we're not commenting on rumors or speculation," a Netflix spokesman said in an e-mail. "The Xbox partnership has been terrific for Netflix members and we're equally excited to announce the partnership with PS3."
A Nintendo spokesman said the company does not respond to rumors or speculation.

Nintendo Announces Larger DS Handheld Game Console
As the rumor mill expected, Nintendo will launch a larger version of its DS handheld console, which it will call the Nintendo DS LL. The DS LL will cost 20,000 yen when it goes on sale in Japan on Nov. 21. Nintendo has not indicated when or if the DS LL will be brought to the United States, but history suggests that it will. The DS LL uses a pair of 4.2-inch screens, as opposed to the 3.25-inch screens used by the new Nintendo DSi. While it will weigh 100 grams more, Nintendo still reportedly rates its battery life as about three hours, the same as the DSi. It too lacks a console slot, however.Although the Wii was once (and perhaps still is) the darling of the video-game community, soe might feel that the Nintendo DS platform is getting a bit long in the tooth. On Thursday, Nintendo saw its global profits fall by 54 percent, and one analyst cited by Reuters called Nintendo's efforts "old hat".Nintendo's problems don't appear too closely tied to its hardware, however. Nintendo DSi LL 4.2? Screen
A few days ago a rumour started going around about a new larger Nintendo DSi that was being created. Nintendo denied it, but now we heard that it actually is getting launched as the Nintendo DSi LL and will be priced at around $221 (conversion from Yen).
The Nintendo DSi LL will ship on November 21 in Japan and will have a 4.2 inch screen. The extra sized screen does make the whole unit a little larger and thicker too at 21.2mm compared to the 18.9mm of the previous model.
When shipping it will come in a choice of 3 colours which includes dark brown, burgandy and natural white. Battery life sees the unit powered for about 4 to 5 hours with maximum brightness set and can go from 13 – 17 hours on a single charge when set on it’s lowest setting.
It is unknown if the DSi LL will leave Japan and make it to Europe or the US but hopefully it will be made available this year.
