Russian Temps Turn Up Heat On Warmers
By Sean Higgins
A Russian think tank alleges that climate-change data obtained from that country have been cherry-picked to overstate a rise in temperatures. With Russia accounting for a large portion of the world’s land mass, incorrect data there could affect the analysis of global temperatures.
The Institute of Economic Analysis, an independent Moscow-based organization, issued the report Tuesday. It was titled, “How Warming Is Being Made: The Case of Russia.”
It alleged that England’s Hadley Centre for Climate Change and the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, the U.K.’s two top climate research outfits, had improperly selected climate data from Russia.
The Hadley Centre has issued a statement saying it was impossible for them to have tampered with the data. The same statement conceded possible flaws, but these were due to “the limited availability of Northern Hemisphere high latitude observations.” It further claimed tha

Copenhagen Summit Is a Farce
Here Gerald Warner with the funniest take yet on the Copenhagen climate summit.
This ?single most important piece of paper in the world? comes, presumably, from an authoritative and totally neutral source? Yes, of course. It?s from the ? er ? UN Framework Committee on Climate Change that is ? er ? running the Danegeld Summit. Some people might be small-minded enough to suggest this paper has as much authority as a ?leaked? document from Number 10 revealing that life would be hell under the Tories.
He's right in asserting that 2009 will be seen by future historians as the year that the hysterical climate change con game began crashing down. There's still a lot of inertia to overcome, but the game is up.

E&E Greenwire, for instance: Copenhagen talks are talk, talk, talk with no agreement yet?
Confusion, Sandra Bailey (source at bottom)
The Tracker will watch things over the weekend and try to post some sort of representative reporting on how it comes out Monday. In the meantime, should you want a super summary of something that defies summation, try the one at E&E’s Greenwire (via NYTimes) that Lisa Friedman and Darren Samuelsohn just filed. It’s lede: “Confusion reigns….” and it then goes on to describe draft texts flying hither and yon, minimal information, things overheard at lunch, high drama, Obama Obama Obama, hots shots steamed that they are out of the loop, and one participant’s hope for “consensus by exhaustion.”

Science sagas of the '90s
The 1990s were marked by marvels that scientists are still trying to understand: the discovery of planets outside our solar system ... the mysterious dark energy that appears to dominate our universe ... embryonic stem-cell research that has sparked so much hope and concern over the past decade.
Today's installment of our 50-year science timeline, drawn up to mark the 50th birthday of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, focuses on the advances of the '90s. This list isn't set in stone, so feel free to weigh in with your own suggested milestones. We'd also love to hear what milestones you're hoping to see in the next 50 years....(read more)

Video: The Known Universe
The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world's most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History.

Lord Monckton reports on Pachauri?s eye opening Copenhagen presentation
By Lord Christopher Monckton
In the Grand Ceremonial Hall of the University of Copenhagen, a splendid Nordic classical space overlooking the Church of our Lady in the heart of the old city, rows of repellent, blue plastic chairs surrounded the podium from which no less a personage than Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the IPCC, was to speak.
I had arrived in good time to take my seat among the dignitaries in the front row. Rapidly, the room filled with enthusiastic Greenies and enviro-zombs waiting to hear the latest from ye Holy Bookes of Ipecac, yea verily.
The official party shambled in and perched on the blue plastic chairs next to me. Pachauri was just a couple of seats away, so I gave him a letter from me and Senator Fielding of Australia, pointing out that the headline graph in the IPCC?s 2007 report, purporting to show that the rate of warming over the past 150 years had itself accelerated, was fraudulent.
Would he use the bogus graph in his lecture? I had seen him do so when

Cimategate: cherry-picking the data
Climategate continues to get richer, as much of the world continues to ignore the growing storm.
Now the Russians appear to have confirmed that a great deal of the temperature data from their part of the world has been ignored by CRU and the IPCC, and—no great surprise—the eliminated readings do not support global warming, while the included ones do:
Analysts say Russian meteorological stations cover most of the country?s territory, and that the Hadley Center had used data submitted by only 25% of such stations in its reports. Over 40% of Russian territory was not included in global-temperature calculations for some other reasons, rather than the lack of meteorological stations and observations.
The data of stations located in areas not listed in the Hadley Climate Research Unit Temperature UK (HadCRUT) survey often does not show any substantial warming in the late 20th century and the early 21st century.
The HadCRUT database includes specific stations providing incompl

That darned Medieval Warm Period
Or Putative Medieval Warm Period? In answer to a comment somewhere back there I came across this at Unlocked Word Hoard - who has a regular commenter who really understands these things:
In one now-notorious e-mail, Michael Mann wrote that "it would nice to 'contain' the putative 'MWP'" (or Medieval Warm Period), but Mann has since argued that what he meant by that was that he simply wanted to identify exactly when the MWP began, not deny its existence. Science Dude, however, finds Mann's explanation unbelievable, both in the context of the e-mail and Mann's other publications. Read enough of what Mann has written about the MWP (or what he prefers to call the "Medieval Climate Anomaly"), and you'll see that his explanation doesn't pass the laugh test. Whether the MWP was just an anomaly or not, Mann clearly meant to hide it in the data.
Go look.
