Add Feed to Your Reader! CrunchPad Developer to Show off Device, Defend Self So, about the CrunchPad... Fusion Garage CEO Chandrasekar "Chandra" Rathakrishnan, Michael Arrington's one-time partner in the now-defunct CrunchPad project, is finally getting ready to address claims that he was behind the death of the device. Rathakrishnan will be speaking with reporters next week, telling his company's side of the story. The CEO will also be showing off the tablet via video conference. Arrington, for his part, places the blame for the device's untimely demise firmly on Fusion Garage's shoulders. The blogger has threatened legal action, writing, "We will almost certainly be filing multiple lawsuits against Fusion Garage, and possibly Chandra and his shareholders as individuals, shortly. The legal system will work it all out over time."

Add Feed to Your Reader! Powerful Prosthetics: The Ultimate Integration of Design and Technology Prosthetics have been used to replace lost limbs since there have been limbs to be lost; during this time, peg legs and crutches have transformed into power suits and robot arms. The prosthetic limb was once a static, inflexible mockery of what it was replacing. Today, incredible technology has gone into the science of prosthetics, making them elegant examples of technology and design that are awe inspiring. We are much closer to Science Fiction than you probably think. Your jaw will drop as you take a journey through the past, present, and future of prosthetic technology. (Images via Africa Science, robot nine, mentalfloss) Prosthetic toes made of wood were recently found on an Egyptian mummy (pictured above), and such ingenuity continues to be required in less technologically advanced areas of the world. Where a prosthetic limb was once carved out of wood, they can now be fashioned out of an old basketball and some sturdy paddles. (Images via we-make-money-not-art, marvelironman)

Add Feed to Your Reader! Collin Cunningham of MAKE builds an infrared heart monitor I love the electronics videos Collin Cunningham produces for Make: Online. Not only does he describe his projects in an entertaining way, he also scores the trippy music for them. After checking out a few projects involving IR heart monitors, I decided to have a go at the interface myself. Seen above are the results of my first experimentation with pulse oximetry. Getting the setup up and running satisfactorily required a bit more time and tinkering than I'd expected - especially after reversing a premature mod to my emitter/detector pair. The next version I try will either use a higher output emitter (see Charles Martin's version) or some amplification hardware (as used in Meng Li's sensor). Collin's Lab: Infrared heart sensor

Add Feed to Your Reader! Kindle Has Best Sales Month in Nov. November isn't even technically over yet, but Amazon's Kindle has already hit a new monthly sales record. The retailer issued a statement today to that effect, but didn't actually release any specific sales number. It did add, however that the e-book reader is, "the most wished for, the most gifted, and the number one bestselling product across all product categories on Amazon." Despite the addition of a few new players in the market--including, most notably, Barnes & Noble's new Nook--the Kindle continues to be the most well-known e-book reader on the market, and will no doubt continue to sell well into the holidays.

Add Feed to Your Reader! Arrington's CrunchPad Dies a Fiery Death Michael Arrington announced the death of the CrunchPad on Monday morning in a blog post heavily spiced with angst and drama.According to Arrignton, the Cruchpad -- a 12-inch Web tablet expected to be priced at about $300 -- was just days away from launch. At the last minute, however, Arrington received an email from Chandra Rathakrishnan, the chief executive of manufacturing partner Fusion Garage, apparently trying to cut Arrington out of the product on the eve of the launch. Fusion Garage, according to Arrington, would market the device itself under its own name."Err, what?" Arrington wrote. "This is the equivalent of Foxconn, who build the iPhone, notifiying Apple a couple of days before launch that they'd be moving ahead and selling the iPhone directly without any involvement from Apple."

Add Feed to Your Reader! Forget Elmo, Robotic Hamster Zhu Zhu Pets Top Toy Sales Who would have suspected that the hot toy of 2009 would be a robotic hamster? If you're not under 12, or a parent, the combination of cute, cuddly, and well, robotics might seem a bit alien. But kids have apparently been flocking to Zhu Zhu Pets (beware of the music!), a line of $10 robotic hamsters that roam through plastic tunnels, down slides and ramps, and power hamster balls. Their appeal can apparently be summed up best by Cepia, the small American toy company that has imported them from China: "The best alternatives to real live hamsters, Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters don`t poop, die, or stink, but they are still a riot of motion and sound." While it's unclear how many Zhu Zhu Pets have actually sold, the National Retail Federation highlighted the toys as one of the most popular sales items over the Thanksgiving holiday. Time to Play Magazine lists them as its top editor's pick for girl's toys. So far, a quick scan of retailers' Web sites seems to bear that out. Every item in the

Add Feed to Your Reader! Slacker Cuts Price of G2 Portable Player by $70 Slacker has dropped the price on its 4GB portable player. For a limited time, the streaming Internet music service is offering the Slacker G2 for $129.99, down from $199.99, and will throw in a free docking station that normally retails for $30. It is available now on the Slacker Web site. The G2, which debuted in late 2008, essentially takes Slacker's music streaming capability on-the-go, and delivers customized music directly to the player. The version that's on sale can hold up to 25 different stations, 2,500 songs, has a total storage of 4GB, and 1GB of personal storage. The dock, meanwhile, connects to a home stereo or computer speakers, charges the player while listening or refreshes stations over Wi-Fi, and can connect to the PC to refresh music or transfer songs.
