Add Feed to Your Reader! Science Art: Opportunity at Concepcion Crater. This image was ganked mercilessly from the brilliant Road to Endeavour blog. That celebration of the Mars rovers is put together by the same person who appears to do something called Astropoetry which looks very, very intriguing. Must investigate this project. But for now, I’ll just look at this image, beamed from the surface of Mars. Crusty rocks, facing north into the sun. They have secrets to tell. [Found via.]

Add Feed to Your Reader! California Shifts Funds Away from Failed Embryonic Stem Cell Research California is quietly shifting funds away from failed embryonic stem cell research and into adult stem cell research. Despite the state's passion for killing unborn babies, it's hard to justify it on an industrial scale without any hope of turning a profit. California's Institute for Regenerative Medicine came into being five years ago, fueled by a conviction that the Bush administration's restriction on embryo-destructive research in the National Institutes of Health was stifling the progress of science. But after years of fruitless work, the Institute has now quietly diverted funds from embryonic stem cell research (ESCr) to adult stem cell research - which has already produced dozens of treatments and all-out cures for maladies ranging from spinal cord injury, to Alzheimer's, to type I diabetes. The California government - which is again teetering on the brink of bankruptcy - in 2004 passed the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, or Proposition 71. The initiati

Add Feed to Your Reader! Yale Climate-Media Forum: Is there a curse on the IPCC that has infected reporters too? Could it be that a curse, a hex, or some other toxin on the brain invades every reporter who tries to report on the errors and miscues behind the IPCC’s careless prediction of an imminent disappearance of the glaciers of Himalaya? And that those reporters become incapable of reporting the affair without compounding things with further errors? Two writers – not journalists, but academics – at Yale University’s Forum on Clilmate Change & the Media, Bidisha Banerjee and George Collins, have out this week a very long and detailed autopsy on the offending passages and how their genesis has been reported. They write: Dozens of articles and analyses of this situation, whether dashed-off

Add Feed to Your Reader! New Hearing Aid Uses Your Tooth To Transmit Sound Sonitus Medical has developed a new device, SoundBite, that uses the natural conduction of teeth and bone to transmit sound to the inner ear even after the outer and middle ear are damaged. [...] There are other hearing aid devices that utilize bone conduction. Most, however, use a titanium pin drilled into the jaw bone (or skull) to transmit sound to the cochlea. SoundBite seems to be the first non-surgical, non-invasive, easily removable device. While they are likely years from retail production, Sonitus Medical plans on having SoundBite ITMs fitted to each individual?s upper back teeth and fabricated fairly quickly (1 to 2 weeks). A complete system is planned to include two ITMs, 1 BTE, and a charger. In the wider world of cochlear implants, SoundBite may only be fit for relatively specialized use. Still, the ability to easily upgrade or replace individual components makes the device competitive. New Hearing Aid Uses Your Tooth To Transmit Sound (Thanks Trevor!) Related posts:Cy

Add Feed to Your Reader! The Desktop Manufacturing Revolution James Cascio has a piece in Fast Company introducing the basic concepts and present status of desktop manufacturing: This doesn’t mean that Wal-Mart will go away any time soon, but it does mean a pretty big shift in the relationship between individuals and their material world. Most notably, it would open up the possibility that the kinds of personalized products now available to those with the right money and know-how may soon be available to everyday people. Thinking of this simply as traditional manufacturing moved from the factory to the neighborhood (or the home office) misses the larger revolution. This isn’t just desktop production (figuratively or literally), it’s democratized production. It will have its own intrinsic dilemmas, from liability to spam, but it will pose a powerful challenge to the status quo. Comment from Dominic Muren: I think you can (and should) take it one step further. Not only are objects print-outs of some design, but there is no reason

Add Feed to Your Reader! A new paper suggests U.S. military aid does nothing to reduce drug production in Colombia. Last month, the U.S. military got some positive international P.R., as Marines landed in Haiti to provide food, supplies, and security for earthquake victims. That our other military aid efforts typically fail to garner such praise is hardly surprising given their focus on American interests around the globe. Drone attacks in Pakistan and bulldozing coca and poppy farms in Bolivia and Afghanistan may be critical to U.S. national security but are more controversial, particularly overseas. Proponents of military assistance argue that it can be good for people in recipient countries as well, pointing to the critical role of military aid in stabilizing nascent democracies (and market economies) by keeping the government?rather than vigilantes or rebels?firmly in control.[more ...] United States - National security - United States armed forces - Haiti - Colombia

Add Feed to Your Reader! Bronx Science Ballers Defy Stereotyping  Bronx Science lost its January match-up with against DeWitt Clinton, but is hoping to ride a three-game winning streak into the postseason. (Photo by Adi Talwar) The gymnasium at the Bronx High School of Science (or "Bronx Science") is an interesting experience for one attuned to the sights of a traditional American sports hall. For one thing, a traditional American sports hall probably lacks the huge placard that greets those entering Bronx Science?s gymnasium, featuring the faces of seven stoic looking men arranged underneath the text ?Alumni Winners of the Nobel Prize.? Indeed, this school is a place of learned adolescents. Athletics, it would seem to the untrained eye, remains a difficult equation for the students at Bronx Science. The stereotype is that students at Bronx Science are not jocks. They tell jokes about parabolas and physics equations. They're probably used to hearing the term "nerd." But to believe that brains would inhibit the Bronx Science basketball team
