wap54g client ap fun
I've got a wap54g v1 that I use to connect one of our desktops that doesn't have a wireless card. So I use it in client ap mode. Recently I encrypted our network (I was just using MACID filtering) and I couldn't get the wap54g to see the network.
I installed the latest official firmware and was still having issues until I found a post that said I needed to turn on SSID broadcast from the wireless router (wrt54g). I did that, and then walked through enabling all the encryption and it worked just fine :)

Getting started with Video4Linux2 & usbvc (Hello World example)
Introduction The Video4Linux2 and usbvc are kernel drivers to allow the interaction of applications with webcams. Before diving in I strongly recommend you read the man page for usbvc(7D) and study the associated header files:/usr/include/sys/usb/clients/video/usbvc/usbvc.h/usr/include/sys/videodev2.hIf you're unfamiliar with this type of low-level API one of the first things that strikes you is a distinct lack of user functions. That's because we're extremely close to kernel land and the way to manage userland <-> kernel interaction is via ioctl(2m) or read/write commands if the device/driver supports it. It's up to you to write the necessary wrapper functions for your application. There are some very good wrappers if you're on Linux or Windows including:Intel Open Computer Vision (OpenCV)Logitech's libwebcamWe could port these to Solaris but that's no fun, although I'll be porting them at a later date when I get time. You learn much more by wr

Men Create More Housework for Women
Hmm, better make sure my wife-to-be does not reads this :o)
What do my readers think about this?
Having a husband creates an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new study. For men, tying the knot saves an hour of weekly chores.View Original ArticleBlogged with the Flock Browser

How to create VC++ project for HotSpot workspace
I am sure very few people would know that on Windows platform, we can create a VC++ project for the HotSpot workspace in JDK sources. It is very useful as it gives me the ability to view and browse HotSpot source code and also build it at a simple click from Visual Studio IDE. It is also very helpful in debugging hotspot issues which can be reproduced on Windows with a simple testcase(and not just at customer site :) )
So let's see how we can create this project for OpenJDK hotspot workspace on 32bit platform and open it in Visual Studio.
There is a batch file 'create.bat' in \build\windows\ folder which creates the VC++ project for hotspot workspace on Windows. Before we run this batch, we need to set two environment variables.
- The 32-bit OpenJDK Windows build requires Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 (VS2003) Professional Edition compiler. Once the compiler is installed, we need to run VCVARS32.BAT to set the compiler environment variables
e.g.
D:\openjdk7\openjdk\hotspo

In My Own Backyard
No, I haven't started getting involved in Moby; neither did Joe Diffie's song influenced me this weekend for a walk down memory lane. To express better about a week, spent at Sun premise, talking to Sun Employees on a Sun product, I don't think I have any better one-liners in my dictionary: I really felt as if I was in my own backyard; everything about this training last week was so comfortable, especially the friendly nature of my friends in picture below.
With this short note let me sign off now, for tomorrow I've a training on IDM again and it's not happening 'in my own backyard.' I wouldn't know if I would take some time to get used to the environment at a client location, but what I know clearly is that if I don't get to sleep properly tonight, I would make a mess of my class tomorrow. So good night!

Sun Tech Days
For the first time ever, Sydney was included in the Sun Technology Days World Tour! For absolutely no charge you get:3 whole days of talks and hands-on labs covering every major technology. Topics included enterprise, desktop, solaris, web 2.0, Java Development and Deployment, Netbeans, Mobility and Glassfish. One day dedicated specifically to university students.Free food and drink - morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea with a reception on the first night. And pretty good stuff too!Several competitions including a chance to win a Wii. Unfortunently, I wasn't allowed to as I work for Sun.Lots of freebies: I was involved in two talks. For the first I showed the simple bouncing ball demo for Kevin Mayo's talk about Sun Spot. The second was a collaboration with Virang, the UTS campus ambassador. We first talked about the campus ambassador program and then showed how the Netbeans GUI builder could make fancy applications surprisingly easily.

Little Sun at Embedded World 2008 Exhibition & Conference
photo from http://www.embedded-world.de
I was so lucky to get a free entrance pass to the Embedded World 2008 in Nuremberg (Germany) and was because of my work as Sun Campus Ambassador of cause looking for Sun Microsystems colleagues and new upcoming technologies from Sun Microsystems. To my surprise I had a really hard time finding anyone who had anything to do with Sun Technologies...I was wondering - why are we not represented when companies like AMD, Intel, Microsoft and the like are represented with big impressive stands? Intel had a cool motorbike controlled by their technologies and Microsoft were there to promote their embedded versions of XP and upcoming Vista embedded (don't know if it’s really embedded as the footprint is around 400 Megs). Lots of representatives for Linux dists where also there, but where was Sun...And where were the Sun Spots?
I went through the list of exhibitors, and finally found something - it was /k/ Embedded Java Solutions , which is a smal

When is enough, enough ?
How do we know we have done enough testing ? I remember "when i'm finished" was a common answer !!
Any test effort will consist of test items (components or systems to be tested), test cases and reports along with a GO/NOGO decision. A significant constraint on any test effort is time, so if a tight deadline means that all testcases cannot be run, then what do we do ? Bring 'risk' in to the decision making process.
Look at the features in the software product/component and rank the importance of each to the customer (in Six-Sigma-speak identify the 'CTQ',, or 'Critical-to-Quality' features). Ask what is the likelihood of each feature failing and what is the impact in terms of severity of the failure from the customers perspective.
How do you know if something is likely to fail ? Thanks for asking.
One way is to ask how stable is the feature - does it have a high fail rate already ? A stable feature, with few code changes would be less likely to fail than a new or heavily modified

MySQL vs Oracle
Following comparison of world's two most popular database management systems (DBMS) is based on their use as a database for making web based applications.
Now that MySQL is officially a part of Sun, i would any day prefer MySQL for making my web based applications than any other huge (read heavyweight) databases, which probably offers so many features that are basically not needed for creating such applications.
Read Jonathan Schwartz's Blog to find more.
As regards Comparison, i would like to highlight following points:
Firstly being Open Source, MySQL comes as a free download for developers worldwide. On the other hand, for using Oracle, you need a license (and for that matter a pretty costly license)
With Google, Facebook and Sina.com prefering MySQL for creating network services, one cannot doubt over MySQL capability of handling high volumes of data (perhaps in terabytes or even more)
MySQL i

Sun Analyst Summit 2008 - Changing perceptions
I spent the first part of this past week at the Sun Analyst Summit (SAS) 2008 meeting and talking with analysts broadly about Sun's virtualization strategy and about our Sun xVM plans in particular. For an overview, you might want to listen to Steve Wilson and Aisling Macrunnels break-out session on Sun's virtualization plans. In my own meetings with analysts, the key message I was trying to get across was that we are committed to delivering Sun xVM - our virtualization and management platform and strategy for heterogeneous environments. The challenge we have is that the analysts - and actually just about everyone else, is having a hard time getting used to the concept that Sun is truly serious about the whole heterogeneous thing. I've been fielding the "Are you truly serious about Windows/Microsoft support?" and "Why should we believe you?" questions ever since I got here. I understand the skepticism given Sun's history and know that it will take consistent messag

SXDE (Solaris eXpress Developer Edition) 1/08 is out
Solaris Express Developer Edition (SXDE), the Sun OpenSolaris-based distribution for Solaris, Java, and Web 2.0 developers has a new release out: 1/08. Ludo has a post about the integrated web stack as well as a 10-minute screencast.
After giving SMF privileges for Apache/mySQL servers, Ludo shows how the user can use a very simple graphical tool to start/stop and configure services. He also walks you through a small PHP/jMaki/Ajax pre-packaged demo with a mySQL backend. He finally uses NetBeans' PHP support and auto-registering of the AMP-stack to author and debug a simple PHP application. Pretty slick!
SXDE also comes with the NetBeans 6/GlassFish v2 pre-configured bundle and if you're using the VMWare image, I would recommend upgrading the amount of memory from 512 to 2Gb. And in case you're wondering, the VMWare image password for root is SXDE (see also the FAQ).
Check out also Ludo's previous
interview on GlassFish tooling.
