Add Feed to Your Reader! Corporate CEO's Blogging - Peter Principle unplugged One of the biggest advantages, I think, of CEO's using blogs to communicate is that it unplugs the corporate communication drainpipe.  Previously, the blockage was due to the layers of management that information had to flow through/filter through before it got to the field personnel...the ultimate destination as these are the folks that actually execute on the CEO's strategy. Now, a CEO puts out some information, either externally or internally, and everyone sees it. Unfiltered. Was it possible in the past? Sure. Memos from the CEO... but then there is the logistics of distributing that memo. Now, Blog written, blog read in near-real time -- given that the field personnel have the time to read the blog...and the CEO has the time to write the blog.Further, we've exercised the Peter Principle from the equation.  All those mid-level managers who are struggling to look competent and blocking corporate communication...both ways...The beauty of this, is, of course, those managers,

Add Feed to Your Reader! Oh, Oh, A brave new world Well, now that I have started on the path of blogging, I realize that I have bitten off more than I can chew. The standard sense of being overwhelmed when starting any new venture. It's that same old story - initially a bull in a china shop working one's way to surgical efficiency. In the Unix world, I would have been called a "newbie".  And received much scorn and derision for my ignorance of what to many others is just plain common sense. To use another metaphor, I am just starting to speak, so the blogs are coming out cryptic or inappropriate. Very much like a young child learning to speak... so it is with this in mind that I ask of your indulgence.Like a young child, I really do need to listen for a while before attempting to speak. And also learn the words that one is not supposed to use.  In this case, it's the making of mistakes that causes learning. Call it learning theory or signal theory, either way, it's action, reaction, response. Repeat until no more error

Add Feed to Your Reader! Begin some record here Just set up my blog here to record some of my experience in Sun,in Beijing. Besides the one I keep in sohublog--can not move all of them to sunblog as some access issues for my friends. Will try to keep the two blogs updated together for me and for my audience. I really wanna to keep in touch with many others both in work and life ,To be a total social one in this metropolitan for me is really a big challenge,I have not converted my role from a student. It needs time to make the change, though I know it will happen gradually. But for me,I still stayed as before.I like the feeling. To share what I have experienced and will experience with the ones I care about through this piece is a good choice. It's not the only way.but a very useful and cordial mode.

Add Feed to Your Reader!

Add Feed to Your Reader! Sun Tech Days HYD, Day 2 Blog entry by Shripad Patki: Day 2 continued to build on the momentum from Day 1. In the first keynote, David, MySQL co-founder walked us thru a brief history of the company, how/why it adopted opensource lifestyle, how it went about building communities, its approach to innovation, and its business model. In the second keynote, Vijay Anand of Oracle India, gave an interesting talk on how Oracle is bringing Web 2.0 technologies and solutions in the Enterprise world. He called that Enterprise 2.0. For Oracle, it was all about integrating their JDeveloper, Business Integration middleware portfolio, and their web designer/social networking solutions. Would have loved to see the equivalent Sun story covered thru NetBeans, JCAPS, and SNAP ... There were some very interesting sessions during the day around OpenSolaris tuning on AMD and Intel Systems, GlassFish, NetBeans, OpenOffice programming, and an open Opensource community exchange which showcased interesting community contributions,

Add Feed to Your Reader! John Fowler Talks About TACC Last Friday, I was honored to be a part of the dedication ceremony for "Ranger", the world's largest general-purpose supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas in Austin. Ranger is funded by the U.S. Government's National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of a multi-track effort to improve the computing capability available to scientists. Developed by Sun in conjunction with TACC, it is the most powerful computing cluster used for open science research in the world - capable of an astonishing 504 trillion floating point operations per second. Ranger is based on the Sun Constellation System - the world's first open cluster computing environment - and it features ultra-dense compute nodes, ultra-dense InfiniBand switching, high performance storage, and a comprehensive software stack. Clusters like this one use a very broad range of software, including custom-written research codes. Sun software in use at TACC includes Sun Grid Engine, xVM Op

Add Feed to Your Reader! Tethering Windows Mobile 6 and OS X (specifically 10.5). So, for a little while now I've been looking for ways to tether my HTC Mogul (Windows Mobile 6 based PocketPC phone) to my laptop for those moments when wireless connections are sparse. With a Windows based laptop, this is trivial, since both ends are Windows. But, what if we are Windows-less (I'll refrain from reasons why I think you should be), or more pertinently, OS X based? Well, this post is my first from my new tethering between my phone and my MacBook Pro, so there does seem to be an answer. I should start talking about syncing, but there's quite a few resources out there to help with this for OS X and WM6. The best/easiest resource I've found is Missing Sync from Mark/Space. Perhaps some other day I'll go ahead and elaborate on my setup (which includes being to sync via bluetooth or USB, even while using bluetooth for tethering), but for now I just want to tether (hey, remember tether-ball ... weird game, but kind of fun). Now, back to tethering. I found a few resource

Add Feed to Your Reader! What's this all about? "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things..." -- Lewis Carroll This is the first posting for a blog about computer games, virtual worlds, distributed systems, and concurrent programming. If this seems like a strange combination of subjects, then please read on; I'd like to convince you that the combination is not only natural but necessary. First, a bit about me. I've been doing distributed computing and object-oriented programming for some time. I started all this at Apollo Computer, where I worked on text libraries (shipping one of the first commercial C++ class libraries not done at Bell Labs) and distributed systems. When Apollo was acquired by Hewlett-Packard I found myself an HP employee. While there, I led a group that implemented a system that became the base of the first CORBA specification. About 16 years ago, I joined Sun (and more specifically Sun Labs), where I continued working in the area of distributed systems. I did some kibitzing during the de

Add Feed to Your Reader!
